Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has received an official welcome from Pakistan, marking the first visit by a Maldivian head of state to the country in a decade. The welcome ceremony was held at the residence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, where a guard of honour was presented. Accompanying the President were First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a government delegation. According to the President’s Office, the visit is expected to include high-level consultations, discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation, and the exchange of memorandums of understanding. The visit also coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Pakistan, which were formalised on 26 July 1966. President Muizzu is scheduled to hold separate meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari, as well as official high-level talks. The last Maldivian presidential visit to Pakistan was made by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in May 2015.
