Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari has called for strengthening economic ties between Pakistan and the Maldives. Speaking during an official meeting with Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at the Aiwan-e-Sadr presidential palace in Islamabad, Zardari emphasized the need to enhance bilateral relations through robust policies. The two leaders discussed areas including trade, investment, tourism, education, healthcare, human resources, social protection, and sustainable development. Zardari noted that the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, coinciding with President Muizzu's visit, signals a fresh start to deepen ties. He also highlighted Pakistan's past assistance to the Maldives, including support for building the People's Majlis building and the School of Medicine at the Maldives National University. The two presidents acknowledged the severe impact of climate change on small island developing states like the Maldives, and Zardari expressed support for the Maldivian government's Five Million Tree Program. The meeting also covered regional and international issues, with both leaders calling for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in line with UN resolutions. Following the meeting, President Zardari hosted a special luncheon for President Muizzu and the Maldivian delegation, attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, and other senior civilian and military officials.
