Palestinian Detainee Dies in Israeli Prison Amid Reports of Deteriorating Conditions
International ·
Hassan Issa al-Qasha’leh, a Palestinian detainee from Rahat in the Negev, has died in Beersheba Prison in southern Israel, according to reports from the official Palestinian news agency Wafa. Al-Qasha’leh had been held in Israeli custody for over 13 months and was scheduled for release in six months. The Israeli Prison Service confirmed the death of a Palestinian detainee held under administrative detention but did not identify him, stating that an investigation team has been formed to determine the cause of death. Palestinian human rights organizations have raised alarms about deteriorating conditions in Israeli detention facilities, citing systematic violations such as torture, starvation, medical neglect, and abuse. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office holds Israel fully responsible for the safety of prisoners, warning of severe consequences if current policies persist. Since October 2023, Palestinian groups report that at least 100 detainees have died in Israeli custody.
