Parents Who Waited 20 Years for a Child Lose Son; IGMH Issues Apology After 6 Months
Health ·
The Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has issued an apology to the family of an eight-month-old boy who died in late July. The child, Yunus Hussain Abdullah, was the firstborn of parents who had been trying to have a child for over two decades. Following Yunus' death, his family publicly accused IGMH of negligence and delays in his treatment. In response, IGMH conducted an internal review and shared its findings with the family in a three-page letter. The letter, signed by IGMH Medical Director Dr. Aiminath Zaiba Ahmed, acknowledged shortcomings in communication and care, including delays in sharing test results and insufficient guidance during efforts to seek treatment abroad. The hospital admitted that Yunus' initial symptoms resembled a common viral fever, making it difficult to immediately identify the severity of his condition. Additionally, IGMH noted that scans for admitted patients should not be delayed due to public holidays. The family had requested a scan on June 24 and 25, but it was not conducted before Yunus' passing. While IGMH apologized for the tragedy, the family expressed ongoing grief and frustration over the loss of their long-awaited child.
