Parliament Approves Dr. Aishath Rameela as HRCM President in Record Time

Politics ·
The Maldives Parliament concluded its sitting in just eight minutes on Tuesday after approving the appointment of Dr. Aishath Rameela as the new President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). Dr. Rameela, who previously served as the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, received unanimous support from all 38 lawmakers present during an extraordinary session boycotted by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The expedited session focused solely on her appointment, which was forwarded for parliamentary review after her nomination by the President on December 3rd. The Parliament's Human Rights Committee unanimously endorsed her appointment, citing her recent October inclusion in the HRCM as sufficient qualification. Dr. Rameela, a PhD holder in social science, has been a prominent figure in public service, having also served as a state minister in the Health Ministry. Her appointment marks a significant step for HRCM as it continues its mandate to protect and promote human rights in the Maldives.
