Parliament Approves Mohamed Shakeel as New Elections Commission President
World ·
The Maldivian Parliament has approved the appointment of Mohamed Shakeel as the President of the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM). The decision came following a parliamentary vote where 51 members voted in favor of the appointment, while eight voted against.
Under the current legislative framework, appointments to independent institutions require a minimum of 30 votes for approval. Shakeel's confirmation fills a critical leadership void left by the resignation of former President Mohamed Zahid, who stepped down from both the presidency and his membership of the commission.
Legal requirements dictate that a commission president can only be appointed once the body has reached its full membership capacity. To meet this requirement, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu appointed Shakeel as a member of the Elections Commission on June 24, restoring the body to its full strength of five members.
Following the restoration of the commission's membership, President Muizzu submitted Shakeel's name to the Parliament on Monday for formal approval as the agency's head.
Mohamed Shakeel brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as a member of the Elections Commission from December 2014 to May 2018. His tenure with the commission also includes a period as Director General from September 2013 to December 2014.
Prior to this appointment, Shakeel served as the Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation. His return to the ECM is expected to provide stability to the electoral body as it manages the nation's democratic processes.
