Parliament Confirms Dr Mariyam Shabeena as Non-Resident Ambassador to Indonesia
World ·
The Maldives' Parliament has officially approved the appointment of Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed as the Non-Resident Ambassador to Indonesia. The decision follows a formal nomination process initiated by the President on May 13, in accordance with Article 14 of the Maldives Foreign Service Act.
The appointment was finalized on June 24, with 49 members of the Majlis voting in favor of the nomination. This approval comes after a thorough review by the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations, which determined that Dr Shabeena possessed the necessary qualifications for the role and endorsed her candidacy by a majority vote on June 22.
Dr Shabeena is a seasoned diplomat who currently serves as the Maldives’ Ambassador to Malaysia. In her new capacity, she will manage diplomatic relations with Indonesia while continuing her duties in Malaysia, reflecting the strategic importance of strengthening ties within the Southeast Asian region.
Under Maldivian law, the appointment of both resident and non-resident ambassadors requires a dual process: a nomination by the President and subsequent approval by the Parliament. This system of checks and balances ensures that high-level diplomatic representatives are vetted for their expertise and suitability to represent the nation's interests abroad.
