Parliament Considers Joining OIC Labour Centre to Boost Worker Rights

Politics ·
The Maldives Parliament has begun reviewing a motion that would authorize the country's accession to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Labour Centre. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu submitted the request for legislative consent following a Cabinet decision reached on November 10, 2025. The administration emphasized that since the Labour Centre operates as an independent legal entity, joining its governing statute requires parliamentary approval under Maldivian law. The matter has been referred to Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee for detailed consideration, marking the start of formal legislative scrutiny. Established in 2023 as a specialized OIC institution, the Labour Centre works to advance social development across the organization's 57 member states. Its core objectives include creating better working environments, expanding employment opportunities, and strengthening social protection systems. The center's broader mission focuses on ensuring sustainable security and eradicating poverty throughout the Islamic world. The Maldives has maintained membership in the wider OIC since 1976, with this latest move representing a deeper engagement with the organization's specialized agencies. Accession to the Labour Centre would align with the country's ongoing efforts to enhance worker protections and social development initiatives. Parliamentary approval would enable the Maldives to formally sign and ratify the centre's statute, potentially opening new avenues for international cooperation on labor rights and social welfare programs. The Foreign Relations Committee will now examine the proposal before making recommendations to the full Parliament.
