Parliament extends health insurance to foreigners married to Maldivians
Politics ·
In a landmark decision, the Parliament has accepted a resolution to extend Aasandha, the national health insurance scheme, to foreigners married to Maldivian citizens. The resolution, submitted by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim, received unanimous support from all 41 members present.
The proposal emphasizes that the Maldivian constitution guarantees rights and freedoms without discrimination. It highlights how many foreign spouses spend their entire lives in the Maldives, raising families and contributing to the workforce, yet have been excluded from state health benefits.
The resolution argues that these individuals have become integral members of Maldivian families, building their lives and futures here. As such, they deserve the same state protection and healthcare access as other family members through the Aasandha system.
