Parliament Speaker Urges Youth to Draw National Day Lessons from Mohamed Thakurufaanu

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has called on Maldivians to move beyond symbolic celebrations and use National Day as a catalyst for building a stronger future based on historical lessons. Addressing a National Day ceremony in Haa Alifu Baarah as the chief guest, Speaker Abdulla emphasized that the day's significance should not be limited to recounting historical events or participating in traditional sports. Instead, he urged citizens to reflect deeply on the legacy of Mohamed Thakurufaanu and how his life serves as a blueprint for national service. Highlighting the selflessness of Bodu Thakurufaanu, the Speaker noted that despite having access to a life of prosperity and power, the national hero chose a path of sacrifice for the sake of the nation and the Islamic faith. He stressed that this prioritization of the collective good over personal advancement is the primary lesson today's generation must embrace. “Rather than pursuing his own interests and personal advancement, he placed the interests and benefit of the entire nation first,” Speaker Abdulla stated. “We should draw inspiration from his jihad and use those lessons to build a brighter future for tomorrow.” The Speaker further acknowledged that while Bodu Thakurufaanu is the most prominent figure of the liberation struggle, many other unnamed Maldivians made similar sacrifices. He asserted that keeping these memories alive is essential to maintaining the national identity. Concluding his remarks, Speaker Abdulla reminded the audience that National Day belongs to every citizen. He called for a collective commitment to nurture future generations who are prepared to step forward and defend the nation and religion should the Maldives face future threats. He reiterated that the true purpose of the commemoration is to bridge the wisdom of yesterday with the aspirations of tomorrow.
