Parliament Unanimously Approves Shamoon Hameed as Human Rights Commission Member

The Parliament of Maldives has unanimously approved the appointment of Shamoon Hameed as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The decision follows a legislative vote to fill a vacancy within the commission. The selection process began in July when the President’s Office opened applications to find a successor for a current member whose term is set to expire in October. From the resulting pool of applicants, the President submitted two qualified nominees to the Parliament: Shamoon Hameed of Henveiru, Male', and Samaau Ahmed Najeeb of Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Mr. Hameed brings significant institutional experience to the role, having previously held several senior positions within the HRCM, including serving as the commission’s Secretary General. This background provided a foundation of expertise that was scrutinized during the parliamentary review process. Before the final vote, the relevant parliamentary committee conducted interviews with both candidates to ensure they met the stringent qualifications required for the post. After determining that both nominees were suitable, the committee forwarded their names to the Parliament floor. In the subsequent vote held in the chamber, members reached a total consensus, approving Shamoon Hameed's appointment without opposition. The move ensures continuity within the commission as it prepares for the transition of outgoing members in October.
