Parliament Unanimously Confirms Thoriq Ibrahim as Permanent Representative to IRENA

The Maldivian Parliament has unanimously approved the appointment of Thoriq Ibrahim as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu nominated Ibrahim for the role, submitting the proposal to the legislature in accordance with the Constitution and the Foreign Service Act, which governs appointments to international organizations. The decision followed a formal evaluation by the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee. After the committee presented its favorable recommendation to the floor, members voted without opposition to endorse the appointment. Ibrahim brings a deep level of expertise to the position, having previously served as the Minister of Environment under the current administration. He is currently the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Arab Emirates. He succeeds Mohamed Hussain Shareef, the former UAE Ambassador, who previously held the IRENA representative post. Established in 2009, the International Renewable Energy Agency is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to assisting member states in transitioning toward sustainable energy sources. The Maldives has been a member of IRENA since its inception, reflecting the nation's long-term commitment to combating climate change and diversifying its energy portfolio. The agency now consists of 169 member countries, along with the European Union, coordinating global efforts to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
