Parliamentary Committee Approves Former Ministers as Envoys to UAE and Qatar

The Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee has unanimously endorsed the appointment of two former cabinet ministers as ambassadors to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The nominees, appointed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, are intended to strengthen diplomatic ties in two of the Maldives' most strategically significant partner nations in the Gulf region. Thoriq Ibrahim has been approved as the next Ambassador to the UAE, while Adam Shareef Umar will serve as the Ambassador to Qatar. Both individuals bring extensive governance experience to their respective roles, having held high-ranking positions across multiple administrations. The decision came during a committee meeting attended by six members. Kulhudhuffushi North MP Mohamed Daud led the deliberations, highlighting the exceptional educational credentials and professional backgrounds of both nominees. MP Daud argued that their proven track records in government service rendered further interviews unnecessary, a motion that was immediately supported by all present members. Thoriq Ibrahim transitions to the diplomatic corps following his recent tenure as the Minister of Climate Change and Environmental Energy. His career is marked by several senior leadership and ministerial roles, providing him with a deep understanding of state affairs and international relations. Similarly, Adam Shareef Umar offers a wealth of administrative expertise, having previously served as the Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works. His experience across successive governments is viewed as a critical asset for representing Maldivian interests in Qatar. While the committee's endorsement is a pivotal step, the appointment process is not yet complete. The committee will now submit a comprehensive report to the Majlis (the Maldivian Parliament), where the nominations will undergo a formal debate and a final vote before the ambassadors can officially assume their posts.
