Parliamentary Committee Approves Hassan Zareer as Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises
World ·
The Parliament's Government Oversight Committee has unanimously approved the appointment of Hassan Zareer as the Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises. The decision follows the nomination by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on June 8.
Under the Maldivian Constitution, all Cabinet appointments must undergo a parliamentary review process before a minister can formally assume legal authority. Following the President's nomination, the matter was referred to the Government Oversight Committee for evaluation. All committee members present voted in favor of Zareer's appointment.
Zareer brings significant expertise in the financial sector to the role, having previously served as both the Deputy Commissioner General and Commissioner General of the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). His professional background is supported by strong academic credentials, including a Bachelor of Accounting and a Master of Science in Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
In addition to the ministerial appointment, the committee also gave its unanimous approval to changes introduced by President Muizzu regarding the names and mandates of various government ministries. These structural updates are intended to streamline government operations and redefine the scope of departmental responsibilities.
Both the appointment of Minister Zareer and the changes to ministerial mandates will now be submitted to the full Parliament for final consideration. The appointment of Hassan Zareer will be officially finalized following a vote by the members of the Majlis.
