The Parliament's Public Accounts Committee has approved an increase in the allowances for the Chief Justice of the Maldives. The decision was made during a committee meeting held this morning. The proposal, submitted by Funadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Mamdhoo, aims to align the Chief Justice's salary and allowances with those of the Speaker of Parliament. Under the approved plan, the Chief Justice will receive an additional special allowance of MVR 4,125. With this increase and previous changes to the judiciary's salary structure last year, the Chief Justice's total salary and allowances will amount to MVR 95,125. The proposal was seconded by Kela constituency MP Abdullah Sharif and passed with the unanimous consent of all committee members present. The committee had previously approved an increase in the Speaker's salary to MVR 95,125. The committee has also recently approved changes to ministerial salaries and allowances, including a MVR 2,000 petrol allowance, a MVR 12,000 salary for drivers, a MVR 3,000 living allowance for drivers, and an additional allowance of MVR 5,000 for councilors, council presidents, and vice presidents.
