Parliamentary Committee Approves Pay Hike for Chief Justice, Matching Speaker's Salary

Politics ·
The Parliament's Finance Committee on Tuesday approved a significant salary increase for the Chief Justice of the Maldives, bringing the remuneration on par with that of the Parliament Speaker. The decision, passed during a committee meeting this morning, includes a raise in the Chief Justice's allowances to bring the total salary to over 95,000 rufiyaa. Funaadhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Mamdhoo proposed the revision, linking it to recent salary adjustments for the Speaker. The proposal, seconded by Kela Constituency MP Abdullah Shareef, sought to add 4,125 rufiyaa as a special allowance to the Chief Justice's current salary of 91,000 rufiyaa. This will bring the total to 95,125 rufiyaa. The committee's decision follows a vote on Wednesday to increase the Speaker's salary to 95,000 rufiyaa. According to the committee, the recent discrepancies between salaries were due to the Speaker not participating in committee work. The Chief Justice's new salary package aims to align it with the Speaker's compensation.
