World ·
The Parliament’s Decentralisation Committee has unanimously approved the appointment of two new members to the Local Government Authority (LGA) Board, following a review of nominees submitted by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The appointments aim to strengthen the board's expertise in critical areas of social equity and administrative oversight. President Muizzu submitted the candidates for consideration on August 10, seeking individuals with specialized backgrounds to fill key vacancies within the nine-member governing body.
Aishath Arifa, of Thiburoazge, Gaadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, has been approved as the representative for gender equality. Complementing this appointment, Mohamed Arif of Rayvilla, Kanditheemu, Shaviyani Atoll, will join the board as an expert in governance and public administration.
During the committee session, Vilufushi Parliamentarian Hassan Waheed proposed the approval of both candidates, noting that both nominees had demonstrated strong competency during the selection process, achieving average interview scores exceeding 75 marks. The motion was seconded by Nilandhoo Parliamentarian Fathimath Saudha and passed without opposition by the members present.
The Local Government Authority is tasked with overseeing the implementation of decentralization policies across the Maldives, ensuring that island and city councils operate effectively to deliver services to residents. The inclusion of experts in gender equality and public administration is expected to enhance the board's capacity to manage local governance frameworks and promote inclusive development across the atolls.
