Party system is the biggest scam

Politics ·
When people call the party system a scam, they're not just venting anger. They're describing a deep structural flaw that affects every Maldivian's daily life. Why do we keep voting for parties that promise development but deliver only patronage? The answer lies in how our political machinery operates. Parties aren't built to serve the public—they're built to survive. Their primary goal becomes maintaining power through alliances and appointments, not delivering on election promises. This creates a system where political loyalty matters more than competence, where thousands queue for government posts while essential services stagnate. Look at what happens between elections. The same faces rotate through different parties, the same families dominate local politics, and the same empty rhetoric fills campaign speeches. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens watch as their islands struggle with water shortages, healthcare gaps, and economic uncertainty. The system consumes enormous public resources but produces diminishing returns for the people who fund it. This isn't just about one administration or one party. This is about a pattern that repeats regardless of who holds power. The machinery grinds on, distributing positions and privileges while fundamental problems go unaddressed. The real tragedy is that we've normalized this—we expect little and receive even less. What if we stopped accepting this as inevitable? What if we demanded systems that prioritize results over rhetoric? The current model drains our national potential, turning vibrant communities into dependent constituencies. It's time to ask whether the party system serves Maldivians or whether Maldivians serve the party system. The solution begins with recognizing that real change requires more than swapping party banners. It requires rebuilding our political culture from the ground up—where accountability matters more than allegiance, where service outweighs survival. Until then, we remain trapped in this expensive scam, paying with our future while politicians secure their present.
