PayPal Launches in Maldives to Empower Freelancers and Boost Digital Economy
World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially launched PayPal services in the Maldives, fulfilling a key campaign pledge to modernize the nation's payment infrastructure. The service was formally inaugurated at the Barceló Nasandhura Malé hotel, marking a significant shift toward the integration of global e-wallets within the local economy.
The platform is integrated through Ooredoo m-Faisaa, following an inward remittance license granted in October 2024 to Techfin Maldives, a subsidiary of Ooredoo Maldives. After a period of rigorous testing earlier this year, the service is now live, connecting Maldivian individuals and businesses to the global digital marketplace.
Amir Valliani, PayPal’s Vice President and General Manager, emphasized that the platform will provide a secure connection for users, serving as a cornerstone for the administration’s 'Maldives 2.0' vision. Valliani highlighted that the initiative offers a vital opportunity for freelancers and entrepreneurs, effectively diversifying the country's economic streams by allowing locals to receive international payments with ease.
Shadi Qawasmi, Ooredoo Chief Executive and Managing Director, noted that the launch accelerates the nation's journey toward a fully digital Maldives. According to Qawasmi, the integration provides the necessary momentum to build a robust digital economy, opening doors for citizens to pursue expanded international professional opportunities.
While Ooredoo Maldives managed the technical implementation, the project remained a high priority for the government. The administration first revealed its proposal to secure the platform in August 2024. With the official deployment now complete, the Maldives positions itself as one of the region's most advanced digital economies, bridging the gap between local commerce and global financial systems.
