The Criminal Court has remanded a 37-year-old Maldivian man, Safwan Ali from Th. Thimarafushi, for 15 days in custody on suspicion of stealing a phone. According to the remand order, evidence suggests Safwan committed the theft. However, Safwan claims the phone was sold to him by a child whose name he cannot recall. Police countered this by stating they found the phone he claimed was lost still in his possession. Safwan has a prior criminal record in similar cases. Theft is one of the most common crimes in the Maldives.
