The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has said that the honorary doctorate conferred on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu by a Pakistani university is proof that his services to the Maldives are being recognised at the international level.
On 21 October 2026, during his official meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, the International Islamic University of Islamabad conferred the honorary doctorate on President Muizzu. The degree was presented by the university's Vice President, Professor Dr Nadeem Ahmed Sheikh.
In a statement, the PNC said the honour was strong evidence of international recognition of the President's tireless efforts to strengthen the Maldives' economy and the governance of the state. The party also said the recognition reflected the close ties the Maldives has built with friendly countries under a balanced foreign policy that prioritises the interests of Maldivians.
President Muizzu had previously received an honorary doctorate from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in the field of Islamic Leadership and Civilisational Development. He holds a doctorate in engineering from Leeds University.
