Police Implement Major Traffic Restrictions Across Male' for Eid al-Adha Celebrations

Politics ·
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced comprehensive traffic arrangements across the greater Male' region to ensure the safety of worshippers and the smooth flow of movement during Eid al-Adha celebrations. Chief Inspector Ibrahim Imran, Head of Traffic Police, stated that these annual measures aim to create a secure environment for citizens observing Islamic traditions. The primary focus is the Maafanu Stadium, where roads including Maafaiythakurufaanu Magu, Amenee Magu, and Hilaalee Magu will be closed to public traffic from 6:00 am until the conclusion of prayers. To manage the crowds, police have designated specific entry points. Male worshippers may enter through the main gate opposite FAM House on Hilaalee Magu or the gate in front of Iskandhar Koshi. Female worshippers are directed to the dedicated section via the front gate and synthetic track entrance, accessible through Maafaiythakurufaanu Magu and Boduthakurufaanu Magu. Similar closure protocols will be applied to areas surrounding the Islamic Center and Salman Mosque. While the MPS clarified that vehicles will not be towed, they will be relocated by authorities to ensure prayer spaces are entirely vacant before services begin. Detailed no-parking charts have been published to assist motorists. Beyond the morning prayers, specific zones—including Sultan Park, the Islamic Centre's Marble Area, Republic Square, and Izzuddeen Jetty—will be closed daily from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm throughout the four-day celebration period. Public transport operators and private vehicle owners are urged to avoid these restricted zones during these hours. This year, congregational prayers will be held at four main locations: Maafannu Stadium, Villimale Football Stadium, the Hulhumale' Phase 1 synthetic track, and Masjid Hassan Adam in Hulhumale' Phase 2. Additionally, open-air prayer areas have been designated around Nirolhu, Heenaamaa, Feyruggas, and Dhunburigas Magu, with an additional 25 mosques across the region offering services. To maintain order, the MPS will deploy traffic officers, police cadets, and girl guides. Authorities have appealed for full public cooperation with personnel on the ground to ensure an orderly and safe festive period for all residents.
