Police Investigate Beach Wedding of Two Foreign Men at Maldives Resort
Local News ·
The Maldives Police Service has announced an investigation into an incident in which two foreign men were married at a resort in the Maldives. Footage of the ceremony, held on a resort beach and organized as a wedding event, was widely shared on social media and drew significant criticism. In a statement, the police said the act is not legally permissible and is being investigated. Given that Islam is the state religion, the police noted that such acts are prohibited by religious and Sharia principles, the laws of the Maldives, and general social and moral standards. They urged all parties to ensure that foreign employees working in resorts, guesthouses, and other positions do not engage in such acts, and warned that legal action will be taken against those who conduct them. Symbolic wedding ceremonies for tourists are commonly held at resorts in the Maldives.
