Police Investigate Suspected Fake Land Agreements in Malé and Vilimale’

Local News ·
Malé Mayor Adam Azim has revealed that the Malé City Council has filed a police complaint over suspected fake land lease agreements in Malé and Vilimale’. Speaking during Adhdhu’s ‘Etherefuh’ program, Azim disclosed that crucial information has emerged, uncovering fraudulent agreements. He emphasized that the documents referred to the police are believed to be doctored, and making them public could exacerbate issues. Among the agreements under scrutiny is one related to the development of the Malé Fish Market. The case has also been referred to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Auditor General’s Office. Azim confirmed that four agreements have been sent to the police for validation. The controversy follows allegations of irregularities in land contracts during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure as mayor. A land registry published in November revealed 157 leased plots in Malé and Vilimale’, sparking accusations of unlawful practices. Councillors have proposed canceling land leases awarded during Muizzu’s mayorship, citing lack of transparency and procedural violations. However, discussions have been stalled due to the ruling PNC’s majority blocking quorum in City Council meetings.
