Police Investigate Video Showing Same-Sex Wedding Ceremony at Maldives Resort
Local News ·
The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media that appears to show a same-sex wedding ceremony at a resort in the Maldives. In a statement released yesterday, the police confirmed the investigation has begun, noting that the act is not legally permissible under Maldivian law. The police also emphasized that since the state religion of the Maldives is Islam, such acts, which are contrary to religious and Sharia principles, laws, and general social and ethical standards, should not be carried out by any party. The police have also instructed foreign employees working in resorts and guesthouses to refrain from engaging in similar activities. The statement warned that legal action would be taken against those involved. Snapshots from the video show two men holding hands while seated at a table, appearing to be a symbolic wedding ceremony. The incident has drawn strong criticism from many people who expressed dissatisfaction and called for such activities to not be permitted in the Maldives.
