Police Launch Relief Efforts as Heavy Rains Flood Islands Across Maldives
Local News ·
Maldivian police have begun relief and water-draining operations across several atolls as heavy rainfall continues to cause flooding in homes and streets. Police said they are working with councils and other agencies to assist residents affected by the downpour. The heaviest impact has been reported in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, where water entered 20 homes in Nolhivaramu and people from three homes in a worsened condition were moved to safer houses. Four drainage channels have been cut in the island's roads, with work under way on a fifth.
In Haa Dhaalu Neykurendhoo, sandbags were placed around three houses and a shop, while water draining work was carried out in Kumundhoo after a house was damaged. Assistance was also provided in Kulhudhuffushi City, Nolhivaranfaru and Finey. In Lhaviyani Atoll, police working with councils and companies have been using pumps since 09:30 to drain roads in Kurendhoo, Hinnavaru and Naifaru, and to place sandbags at doorways of homes where water was entering. In Baa Kudarikilu, work to drain water from the island began around 09:30, and in Noonu Landhoo, the Landhoo Police Post helped place sandbags around affected houses.
Police said operations are continuing with relevant authorities and councils to help islands overcome the flooding and protect people's property and homes. They have also appealed to the public to be careful and take safety precautions.
