Police Release Names of Nine Suspects in Gang Rape of Woman and Children in Southern Maldives

Local News ·
Police have publicly identified nine individuals arrested in connection with a horrific gang rape case involving a woman and multiple children in a southern island of the Maldives. The suspects, whose names and ages were released by the police on Sunday, range in age from 20 to 35. They were arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman and exploiting children, in an incident reported to the police last Tuesday. A specialized team from Male has been deployed to the island under the Upper South Police area to lead the investigation. Authorities have described the case as a serious crime. The arrests come amid a worrying trend of rising sexual crime reports in the Maldives. Police statistics show that 272 sexual offense cases were reported last year, while 223 such cases have been recorded so far this year.
