Police Summon Repeat Dangerous Drivers to Police Station for Counselling
National ·
Maldives Police Service has begun summoning people identified in previous police records as having been previously stopped in connection with dangerous speeding on the roads, bringing them to the police station for counselling.
Under the programme launched to summon to the police station and advise people who have repeatedly driven dangerously on the roads, a 22-year-old Maldivian man was counselled yesterday. He is the first person to be summoned to the police station and advised under the programme.
Police said the man's records include driving in a manner that creates fear among the public by performing stunts, driving zigzag at high speed, driving against the one-way direction, and driving while talking on a mobile phone. Police also said his records include driving with the vehicle's annual fee expired and driving while his licence was withheld.
According to police, work is ongoing to identify people who repeatedly drive dangerously, summon them to the police station and counsel them, in order to ensure road safety and security.
While the effort to summon and advise people who drive motorcycles dangerously on the roads has begun, a 26-year-old woman recently died from injuries sustained after being hit by a motorcycle that was driven dangerously on Sosun Road.
The person who drove that motorcycle was also someone without a licence who rode zigzag, according to police. In that case, the motorcycle rider was arrested and has been detained until the trial concludes.
