Police.mv App Fights Cybercrime

Politics ·
The Maldives Police Service is preparing to launch a specialized mobile application called Police.mv, designed to enhance public awareness about crimes occurring in cyberspace. During an appearance on PSM's Raajje Miadhu program, Police Inspector Azif Abbas explained that the app will serve as a vital public resource, providing essential information about cybercrimes and protection strategies. The application will feature databases of mobile numbers and bank accounts used by scammers, along with known phishing links used in fraudulent schemes. When new scam methods emerge, relevant information will be promptly added to the platform, with updates scheduled every eight hours to ensure current threat intelligence. Additionally, individuals who report cases will benefit from tracking their case progress and communicating directly through the application. This cybersecurity initiative coincides with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's ratification of significant amendments to Maldivian laws targeting cybercrime. The legislative updates span the Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act. Notably, the Penal Code amendments specifically criminalize acts committed in cyberspace, introducing new offenses including unauthorized access to computer systems, unauthorized interception of computer data, system interference, device misuse, cyber violence, computer-related forgery and fraud, and copyright infringement. — Source fragments:
