President Appoints Three Former Officials as Ambassadors-at-Large to Fill Diplomatic Vacancies
Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Adam Shareef Umar, Thoriq Ibrahim, and Fathmath Dhiyana Saeed to the position of Ambassador-at-Large. Two of the new appointees are former Cabinet Ministers who recently resigned from their portfolios at the President's request.
According to the President, these appointments are designed to fill existing vacancies in ambassadorial and high commissioner posts following recent structural changes within the government. The administration clarified that no new positions were created for these roles; rather, the appointments address current gaps in the Maldives' diplomatic representation.
While the three appointees are expected to lead foreign missions, their transition to overseas roles is subject to established diplomatic protocols. Before assuming their duties abroad, they must undergo formal approval processes, which include receiving the necessary clearances from both the host countries and the Maldivian Parliament (the Majlis).
These diplomatic appointments follow a significant cabinet reshuffle, in which President Muizzu reduced the size of the cabinet from 20 to 15 ministers. During this restructuring, five new ministers were brought into the fold, while two of the newly appointed ministers had previously served as ambassadors prior to their cabinet roles.
The strategic movement of experienced officials into diplomatic roles reflects a broader effort to streamline government operations while maintaining strong international relations and representation for the Maldives on the global stage.
