President Assures High Quality Standards for USD 500 Million Thilamale’ Bridge

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that the construction of the Thilamale’ Bridge is undergoing rigorous independent quality assurance, led by the same world-renowned firm that oversaw the Sinamale’ Bridge project. Speaking on PSM’s Nation Chat program, the President emphasized that the same director who managed the quality standards for the previous bridge is now leading the efforts for this new infrastructure development. The Thilamale’ Bridge is a massive undertaking designed to link Malé, Vilimale’, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu. The project encompasses approximately 6.7 kilometers of bridges, causeways, and connecting highways, creating a vital transportation artery for the region. Valued at roughly USD 500 million, the project is funded through a USD 100 million grant and a USD 400 million line of credit from India, supplemented by Maldivian government investment. According to President Muizzu, the project will serve as a catalyst for the region's economic and social development. While Malé and Vilimale’ are already linked, the President clarified that asphalt laying for the entire stretch will only commence once the connection to Gulhifalhu is established. He expressed optimism that the entire project will be completed within a year. The project has seen a significant increase in momentum under the current administration. Under the previous government, the bridge was contracted for completion within their term, yet only 30 percent of the work had been finished by the time they left office. Following a series of collaborations between the Maldivian government, the Indian government, and the contractors to accelerate construction, progress has surged. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development now reports that 76 percent of the overall project is complete, marking a substantial leap toward finalizing one of the country's most critical infrastructure goals.
