President Assures Rasmalé Will Be Home to Maldivians and Muslims
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assured that once the Rasmalé development project is completed, its residents will be Maldivians and Muslims from other countries. Speaking in the 'Nation Chat' program, the President said that Rasmalé will be developed to maintain the Maldives' 100 percent Muslim character, with no sale of pork or alcohol, and with mosques and daily prayers. He also stated that no foreign entity would control any school or educational institution in the area. The remarks come amid concerns over the handover of over 500 hectares of reclaimed land in Rasmalé to Eagle Hills for 99 years without rent, and fears of Jewish settlement. Former MP Ali Hussain has called the move unjust to those in need of housing, and opposition parties have expressed concern, with a resolution submitted to the People's Majlis being excluded by the government's super majority.
