President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to dissolve the board of the Maldives Male City Group of Hospitals and establish a new board, as part of a government move to bring all tertiary-level hospitals in the country under one unified system.
Speaking on the Nation Chat program, President Muizzu said the current arrangement where hospitals in Malé are grouped together will be expanded to include all tertiary-level hospitals and other hospitals designated as such across the country. He said the aim is to unite them under one mindset and establish a single system.
The President stated that the change will eliminate redundancies in the health sector and increase operational robustness. He said hospitals can be linked under the new system within three to four months starting from next November.
President Muizzu also said procedures will be established to fully utilize the services of doctors who are receiving education at government expense. He highlighted that the new system will make it easier to share resources between hospitals and utilize technical services of doctors from one place to another.
The President clarified that this is not a project to employ additional staff, but rather to improve services to citizens by utilizing existing resources and staff in the most complete manner.
He emphasized that developing the health sector is one of the highest priorities of this government, and said many measures will be included in the upcoming budget to strengthen the sector.
However, despite the President's assurances, work on health service centers being built in various islands remains halted, and ordinary citizens continue to express concerns daily regarding issues such as lack of medicines.
