President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assured citizens who were eligible for, but did not receive, Hiyaa housing scheme flats that they will be accommodated under the current administration's new social housing programmes. He made this announcement while addressing residents of the Henveiru ward in Malé City during a community meeting on Sunday. The President stated that eligible applicants simply need to re-register for the new initiatives, with no additional documentation required. These 7,500 housing units will be developed through a combination of financing from the Bank of Maldives, an Indian Line of Credit, and other funding mechanisms. President Muizzu explained that the distribution of these flats will be conducted in a phased manner. He emphasized that constructing all units under a single, simultaneous project is not a realistic approach, making a staged rollout the most practical solution for delivery. Shifting focus to ongoing development projects, the President provided an update on the Hulhumalé Phase III land reclamation. He confirmed that the work is progressing and is on track for completion by the end of this month. Land allocation and registration for this phase are scheduled to commence in January of next year. He assured citizens that land-use plans are being finalized and that plots previously allocated to individuals will not be revoked. Further development plans were also unveiled. The President announced that dredging work in Giraavaru Falhu will begin immediately after the conclusion of the Hulhumalé Phase III project. By deploying two dredgers, the government aims to complete this work within a three-month timeframe. Land will be distributed to beneficiaries following the completion of the dredging operations. The President concluded by confirming that funds for installing essential utility services—such as water, electricity, and sewage systems—in the newly reclaimed areas have already been allocated in the budget for the coming year.
