President Muizzu Addresses Housing and Infrastructure Needs During Ukulhas Development Visit

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has met with the Ukulhas Island Council and local representatives to identify and address the island's most pressing development priorities. The consultation, held at the Ukulhas Convention Centre, included members of the Women's Development Committee (WDC) and leaders from various local institutions. A primary focus of the discussions was the critical housing shortage on the island. Council members urged the administration to provide additional housing units and proposed further land reclamation by connecting existing reclaimed zones to expand the available living space. The council emphasized that reclaimed land must be made habitable through the immediate provision of essential services, including water, sewerage, and electricity, alongside the construction of necessary road networks. Beyond residential needs, the council highlighted significant challenges in expanding the island's cemetery, noting difficulties in securing the required land for the project. The meeting also touched upon essential utility management, with local leaders requesting that waste management responsibilities be transferred to the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) to ensure more efficient service. Economic concerns were also raised, specifically the need for a more sustainable system to ensure that fuel remains available to residents and businesses at affordable prices. President Muizzu assured the attendees that the concerns raised by the council would be thoroughly reviewed by the administration. During the session, attending Ministers provided progress updates on ongoing development projects, detailing the current status of initiatives already underway on the island. This engagement reflects the government's ongoing effort to align national development goals with the specific needs of island communities, focusing on infrastructure and basic services to improve the quality of life for residents in the Ari Atoll region.
