President Muizzu Advocates Same-Day Elections for Fairer Parliamentary Representation
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called for aligning presidential and parliamentary elections on a single day, arguing it would create a more equitable electoral environment and improve governance in the Maldives.
Speaking at the 'Espresso With the President' youth event, Muizzu emphasized that synchronized elections would allow all political parties and candidates to compete on a level playing field. The foremost benefit, he said, is paving the way for a fairer and freer electoral process.
The President noted historical trends where ruling parties have gained supermajorities in Parliament, often due to lower voter turnout in parliamentary polls and the advantage incumbents hold through government resources. In contrast, presidential elections typically show more balanced results between major parties.
By holding both elections together, Muizzu believes voter participation could increase, leading to a Parliament that better reflects the will of the people. He also highlighted that the current six-month gap between elections disrupts governance, whereas same-day voting would allow a newly elected government to start work immediately without interruption.
Muizzu previously stated that if the proposal is approved in the upcoming referendum scheduled for April 4, it would help align budget preparation with the new government's term, ensuring smoother fiscal planning.
Responding to criticism that combined elections might reduce leaders' engagement with the public, the President asserted that leaders genuinely committed to serving the people would maintain active connections regardless of the electoral schedule. This push for reform is part of broader discussions to enhance transparency and participation in Maldivian democracy.
