President Muizzu Affirms Strategic Partnership with China to Drive National Development

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to its comprehensive strategic partnership with China, describing the relationship as one built on mutual respect, sovereign equality, and shared development. Speaking at a reception celebrating the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the President emphasized that the bond between the two nations has evolved into a forward-looking alliance with tangible benefits for Maldivian citizens. President Muizzu highlighted that the partnership extends beyond diplomatic terminology, manifesting in critical infrastructure and urban initiatives. He specifically cited the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge as a symbol of this connection, noting that such projects represent more than just concrete and steel, but serve as vital links between people and communities. Beyond infrastructure, the President pointed to China's contributions in education, technical training, and institutional support. He noted that the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement continues to expand economic engagement, aligning with the Maldives' ambitious goal of becoming a developed state by 2040. Addressing the global landscape, the President remarked that the partnership is particularly valuable amidst rising global instability and the urgent threat of climate change. He noted that small island developing states are uniquely vulnerable to external shocks, asserting that no nation, regardless of size, can face these modern challenges in isolation. President Muizzu called for an international approach rooted in dialogue and cooperation rather than division. He expressed a desire to further align bilateral cooperation with the Maldives' national priorities, specifically mentioning the utilization of China’s four global initiatives to foster growth. Concluding his remarks, the President stressed that the ultimate strength of the relationship lies in the connections between people—including students, entrepreneurs, and families. He expressed confidence that these grassroots ties will ensure the partnership grows across generations, contributing to a more stable and prosperous world for both nations.
