President Muizzu and ITFC Chief Discuss Expanding Trade and Economic Cooperation
World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Adeeb Yousuf Al Aama, Chief Executive Officer of the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC), met at the President’s Office to discuss strengthening economic ties and expanding trade opportunities for the Maldives.
The high-level discussions focused on identifying new avenues for economic cooperation and trade development. Both leaders emphasized the importance of improving national infrastructure to support the Maldives' broader development goals and long-term socio-economic stability.
During the meeting, President Muizzu and Al Aama reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and the ITFC. This relationship is seen as a critical component of the nation's strategy to diversify its trade portfolio and secure sustainable financing for essential imports.
The ITFC, a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), was established to foster trade among member states and elevate their socio-economic conditions. By providing strategic trade financing, the corporation helps member nations bridge funding gaps and stabilize their markets.
The Maldives has a history of cooperation with the ITFC dating back to 2005. This partnership began in the wake of the devastating 2004 tsunami, following initial support provided by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group. Since then, the Maldives has successfully utilized ITFC trade financing on multiple occasions to bolster its economy and manage essential trade requirements.
This latest dialogue signals a continued reliance on multilateral Islamic financial institutions to drive the Maldives' economic agenda, ensuring the country remains resilient in the face of global trade fluctuations.
