President Muizzu and PM Anwar Ibrahim Strengthen Ties as Maldives and Malaysia Mark 58 Years

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the deep-rooted diplomatic and cultural bonds between the Maldives and Malaysia, expressing gratitude for the neighbor's enduring support as the two nations celebrate 58 years of formal relations. Speaking during a State Luncheon held in honor of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during his State Visit to the Maldives, President Muizzu emphasized that the connection between the two peoples transcends official diplomatic records. He described the bond as a special relationship sustained across generations, noting that citizens of both nations are the most vital stakeholders in maintaining these strong ties. The President praised Malaysia's ability to achieve rapid modern progress and economic expansion while successfully preserving its national identity. He noted that Malaysia’s investment in its people serves as a model for the Maldives, which is currently prioritizing education, digitalization, technology, and economic resilience. “Like Malaysia, the Maldives is also working to advance education, skills, digitalisation and technology,” President Muizzu stated, adding that there is significant scope to enhance bilateral cooperation in these strategic areas. Key highlights of the discussion included Malaysia's ongoing financial and educational assistance, as well as the facilitation of visas for Maldivian families with children requiring special needs. The President also welcomed Malaysia's support for a proposal involving Petronas to conduct a study in the Maldives, signaling a potential expansion of energy sector collaboration. On the economic front, President Muizzu thanked Prime Minister Anwar and the Malaysian government for considering a currency swap facility to bolster financial stability and for agreeing to initiate discussions on a Preferential Trade Agreement. Beyond economics, the two leaders expressed a shared commitment to working closely on the international stage. They pledged to collaborate on urgent global challenges, specifically addressing the impacts of climate change and the critical protection of ocean ecosystems, both of which remain existential priorities for the island nation.
