World ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and World Bank Regional Vice President for South Asia, Johannes Zutt, met at the President’s Official Residence, Mulee’aage, to discuss critical development priorities for the Maldives, focusing on renewable energy, digitalization, and healthcare infrastructure. A primary focus of the talks was the urgent need to reduce the Maldives' heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels. President Muizzu emphasized that transitioning to sustainable energy is essential not only for environmental reasons but to significantly cut the high costs associated with fuel imports, which strain the national budget. The two leaders explored strategies for implementing affordable and reliable energy solutions. President Muizzu stressed that while development projects must advance, they must remain sustainable and aligned with the long-term economic needs of the country. He further noted that the private sector will play a complementary role in supporting these public-sector initiatives. Beyond energy, the discussions touched upon the government's push for digitalization to streamline public services and the continued necessity of World Bank support for the health sector. The President expressed gratitude for the World Bank's enduring partnership in helping the Maldives reach its broader development milestones. Johannes Zutt reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to assisting the Maldives. He specifically highlighted that embracing renewable energy would reduce the nation's vulnerability to global fuel price volatility, providing a more stable economic foundation for the archipelago. The meeting underscores the government's current strategy of balancing aggressive infrastructure growth with fiscal responsibility and a transition toward a greener, digitally-driven economy.
