President Muizzu Announces Construction of Seven Parking Buildings to Ease Malé Congestion

Physical construction on a network of dedicated parking buildings aimed at solving chronic traffic congestion across the Greater Malé region will begin shortly, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced. The administration is developing seven multi-storey parking facilities spanning Malé, Hulhumalé, and Vilimalé to address the capital's severe spatial constraints. Once completed, these structures will provide designated parking for over 2,600 cars and 1,000 motorcycles, removing a significant number of vehicles from the streets. Speaking during the third episode of Public Service Media’s ‘Nation Chat’ programme, President Muizzu emphasized that this infrastructure project is a cornerstone of the government's strategy to establish permanent solutions for urban congestion. He confirmed that the necessary land has already been formally allocated, including two specific plots within Malé where work is set to commence immediately. The President further detailed that his office will oversee the practical enforcement of street parking regulations. This will be coordinated with the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade to ensure the new facilities are utilized effectively to clear public roads. Addressing political backlash, President Muizzu dismissed claims from the opposition regarding the newly established Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office. He refuted allegations that the office would lead to inflated state spending through redundant hiring, clarifying that the entity will be staffed by experienced personnel transferred from existing government institutions. This office will hold full regulatory authority over traffic management and street enforcement. The initiative builds on previous momentum, following the March foundation-laying ceremony for a flagship 13-storey facility in Hulhumalé Phase I. This landmark project is designed to accommodate over 1,100 vehicles and will feature integrated commercial retail spaces, electric vehicle charging stations, and sports facilities, blending utility with urban lifestyle needs.
