President Muizzu Announces High-Tech Reintegration Centre to Combat Juvenile Drug Crime

World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art reintegration programme designed to rehabilitate juvenile offenders, specifically those caught in the Maldives' ongoing drug epidemic. The initiative aims to move beyond traditional punishment, providing young people with the tools necessary to lead responsible and constructive lives. Speaking on the third episode of 'The Pulse' podcast, President Muizzu argued that law enforcement alone cannot curb the drug crisis. He emphasized that the state must identify and treat the systemic root causes that drive youth toward crime and substance abuse. According to the President, several socioeconomic factors contribute to this cycle, including chronic housing shortages, limited employment opportunities for youth and women, and gaps in the healthcare and education systems. He framed the new reintegration project as part of a broader national strategy to eliminate these drivers. To support this vision, the government is pursuing a multi-pronged approach. This includes new land reclamation projects to tackle the housing crisis, expanding access to quality healthcare, and fostering diverse income-generating avenues such as support for small-business start-ups and home-based work for women. The President revealed that a dedicated site at Uthuruthilafalhu has been identified for the reintegration facility, separate from land earmarked for the national housing scheme. While acknowledging the high cost of the project, he confirmed that funding is being secured and proposals are currently under evaluation. President Muizzu expressed his commitment to breaking ground on the facility as soon as possible, with the goal of delivering measurable outcomes within the current presidential term. He reaffirmed that the center will employ a comprehensive, modern approach to rehabilitation, ensuring that juvenile offenders are not merely processed through the legal system but are meaningfully reintegrated into society.
