President Muizzu Announces Hope Island Rehabilitation Center for At-Risk Youth

World ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the upcoming launch of 'Hope Island,' a specialized rehabilitation project designed to rescue at-risk youth from criminal environments and provide them with a pathway toward productive citizenship. Speaking on the third episode of The Pulse podcast series, the President emphasized that the initiative shifts the focus from merely punishing the consequences of crime to addressing its root causes. The government intends to combat youth delinquency by solving housing shortages, creating sustainable income-generating opportunities, and supporting the development of small businesses for young people. Hope Island will be established on 15 hectares of reclaimed land in Uthuru Thila Falhu. Designed to accommodate up to 700 residents, the center will function as a comprehensive sanctuary offering basic and religious education, psychosocial interventions, and therapy programs. To ensure holistic development, the facility will also feature vocational training centers, healthcare services, and contact sports programs. President Muizzu acknowledged that securing the necessary funding for such an ambitious project took considerable time. However, he confirmed that proposals are currently being evaluated and implementation is set to begin shortly. The administration aims to complete the entire project within the current government term. Under the proposed framework, children admitted to Hope Island will remain at the facility until they reach the age of 18. Following their rehabilitation, they will be required to undergo a period of service within either the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) or the Maldives Police Service, integrating them into disciplined national institutions before returning to civilian life.
