World ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the development of a state-of-the-art police headquarters in Male’, marking a significant step in the government's plan to modernize the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
Speaking at the 93rd Anniversary of the Maldives Police Service, the President emphasized that addressing the operational and structural challenges facing the police is a top priority for his administration. He noted that while the police service maintains the closest relationship with the public, legal and structural gaps still hinder the effective delivery of services.
To address these systemic issues, the government will conduct a comprehensive study to identify specific gaps and implement solutions tailored to the requirements of the police force. This initiative follows efforts over the past two and a half years to streamline operations and improve the service's internal structure.
Focusing on urban infrastructure, the President highlighted a critical shortage of police facilities in Male’ relative to its high population density. To remedy this, the administration will facilitate the construction of an additional building at the Iskandhar barracks and develop a new, spacious police station in Hulhumale’ Phase II. Simultaneously, the main police headquarters in Male’ will undergo extensive upgrades to meet modern international standards.
Beyond the capital, the government remains committed to completing the development of island police stations by next year, ensuring a consistent security presence across the archipelago.
President Muizzu praised the police for their role in maintaining national peace and addressing complex social issues. He further stressed the importance of the service remaining independent, asserting that the Maldives Police Service continues to operate without political influence.
