President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed major infrastructure projects for the Malé region, backed by foreign financing. New parking facilities will be built using an Indian Line of Credit, while road network upgrades will proceed with grant aid from China.
The parking expansion will see two facilities constructed in Malé, with additional structures planned for Villimalé and Hulhumalé. The Villimalé site is intended for the bridge landing area to improve traffic management, and the Hulhumalé location is being chosen for public convenience. President Muizzu stated that the required documentation for the Indian credit line has already been submitted.
Addressing chronic congestion, the President emphasized his administration's direct collaboration with the Traffic Police and the public. He highlighted that a new system permitting traffic fines to be paid in installments has already been adopted by approximately 1,000 individuals through formal agreements.
Concurrently, the government is moving forward with a Chinese-funded project to upgrade Malé's road network. While the design phase is ongoing, preliminary work has commenced to speed up implementation. A key focus is the Malé market precinct, where road improvements are slated for completion by the end of Ramadan. These upgrades are anticipated to significantly alleviate congestion in one of the capital's busiest areas.
