President Muizzu Announces Prayer Facilities and Mandatory Breaks at Maldivian Sports Venues

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a government initiative to integrate Islamic prayer facilities into sports venues across the Maldives. The plan aims to harmonize the nation's active sporting culture with its religious obligations, ensuring athletes and spectators can observe prayers without disruption. Speaking at a weekly press conference, President Muizzu highlighted that while sports are deeply embedded in Maldivian life, the timing of matches and practices has historically clashed with prayer schedules. The President noted that this conflict has persisted for years, leading some to neglect their religious duties in favor of athletic pursuits. "It is not the way to play sports by neglecting prayers," the President stated, emphasizing that the principles of Islam and the Constitution should guide every aspect of citizens' lives. To resolve this, the government will construct dedicated prayer spaces, complete with modern ablution areas, within all sports complexes currently under development. These new facilities will be rolled out across various sporting locations nationwide through a partnership with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness. Beyond infrastructure, the President introduced a new operational mandate for sporting events. All sports activities will now be suspended for approximately 20 minutes following the call to prayer, allowing participants and attendees sufficient time to fulfill their religious obligations. The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness has been tasked with the implementation of these measures. The ministry will be responsible for designating appropriate prayer spaces and enforcing the scheduled breaks at all sporting facilities to ensure a consistent national standard.
