President Muizzu Announces State-of-the-Art Engineering Laboratory to Boost National Research

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art engineering laboratory in the Maldives, aimed at advancing research and analysis across multiple technical disciplines. The announcement was made via a social media video message to mark Maldives Engineers’ Day on August 30. The new facility is designed to serve as a hub for innovation, catering to both Maldivian students and international researchers. The laboratory will support a wide array of specialties, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, as well as cutting-edge fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence, aeronautical engineering, and digital engineering. Addressing the need for a more skilled local workforce, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of increasing the number of Maldivians pursuing higher education in engineering. He acknowledged that while the profession is demanding, the government is committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and support to encourage students to enter these critical fields. To ensure the project remains viable, the President assured that the laboratory would be developed through a sustainable investment model. This approach is intended to prevent the project from placing an undue burden on the national budget while still providing high-level technical capabilities. Maldives Engineers’ Day was designated by President Muizzu to be observed annually on August 30. The date holds significant historical value, commemorating the official opening of the Sinamalé Bridge, one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the country's history. By integrating academic research with practical application, the government hopes to bridge the gap between theoretical study and industry needs, fostering a new generation of home-grown engineers capable of leading the nation's development.
