President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed a two-year plan dedicated to implementing special measures aimed at bolstering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The announcement comes following concerns raised by entrepreneurs during a meeting held on 17 December 2025. The Cabinet of Ministers discussed these issues, focusing on achieving favorable outcomes for SME development initiatives outlined in the government’s manifesto. President Muizzu emphasized that some measures will commence on 1 January 2026. Among the key concerns from SMEs were unpaid government bills, amounting to billions of Maldivian Rufiyaa. In response, Muizzu stated efforts are underway to settle the most overdue payments by Ramadan, while also addressing unpaid dues owed to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
