President Muizzu Appoints Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur as Information Commissioner

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Abdul Azeez Jamaal Abu-Bakur as the new Information Commissioner of the Maldives. The appointment comes following the expiration of the term of the previous commissioner. The appointment was formalized under Article 44(d) of the Right to Information Act. Mr. Abu-Bakur's return to the role follows a formal nomination process that was submitted to and approved by the Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament. This marks a second tenure for Mr. Abu-Bakur in this critical oversight role. He previously served as Information Commissioner from 2014 to 2019, providing him with foundational experience in managing the commission during its early years of operation. Beyond his work with the Information Commission, Mr. Abu-Bakur brings a wealth of administrative experience from various senior government positions. He has previously served as the Minister of State for Islamic Affairs, contributing to the state's religious and social governance. Most recently, he held the position of Minister of State for Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, where he focused on the preservation of the nation's linguistic and cultural identity. His appointment is expected to bring seasoned leadership back to the Information Commission as it continues to uphold transparency and the public's right to access official information.
