Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Dr Mohamed Mahid Shareef as the Principal Secretary of the Citizens’ Complaints Bureau. The appointment, which took effect on May 18, places Dr Mahid in a ministerial-level role tasked with leading the government's new mechanism for public grievance redress. Dr Mahid brings extensive administrative experience to the role, having previously served as the Permanent Secretary for several government ministries. He most recently acted as the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives and has served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM). His academic credentials include a Doctor of Business Administration and a master’s degree in Public Sector Management. The Citizens’ Complaints Bureau was established under a presidential decree, a move first announced by President Muizzu during his third Presidential address. The bureau's primary mission is to heighten government awareness of public concerns and ensure that citizen inquiries are addressed with transparency and accountability. Operating under the direct oversight of the President’s Office, the bureau is designed to modernize how the state interacts with its people. The system will utilize digital management to track complaints and improve the efficiency of addressing public criticism. To ensure accessibility, the bureau will provide a 24-hour call center, allowing citizens to submit grievances at any time. Beyond intake, the bureau is empowered to coordinate directly with relevant government agencies to gather necessary information, streamlining the resolution process and reducing the bureaucratic hurdles citizens often face when seeking answers from the state.
